Though described in 1860 as "a hopeless spot for a town
site" Napier has grown and flourished. Located on the southwest
shores of Hawkes Bay, Napier enjoys a sunny climate and settled
weather. The climate in Hawkes Bay allows for fruit growing, vineyards,
and tourism to all make a major contribution to Napier's economy.
Napier also benefits from a world class harbour, unique attractions,
and a city pride in being special.
A devastating earthquake in 1931 levelled most of the city which
was rebuilt in the then fashionable Art Deco style. Over the past
decade people have come to appreciate just how different their
city is and Napier is now considered the Art Deco Capital of the
world.
Other world class attractions include Cape Kidnappers - the only
mainland gannet colony, the Marine Parade which includes Marineland
of New Zealand, and an Aquarium, vineyards with award winning
wines, and special events such as the Mission Concert, Harvest
Hawkes Bay weekend, and the annual Art Deco weekend. Tourism is
a major part of the local economy and the city is filled with
places to stay, things to do, and friendly people with a friendly
attitude to make a visit special.
